Taxes Summary
What each tax collected and reclaimed over a period, read from the general ledger rather than by re-adding your documents. Anything that posts tax appears here the moment it is recorded, and the figures match the Balance Sheet's tax accounts because both read the same entries.
Rows are grouped by tax and rate, so if a rate changed mid-period each rate is its own line, because they are separate figures on a return, and blending them would produce a rate that matches nothing you have to file. Tax withheld by a customer is not included here; that is income tax withheld on your behalf, not tax you charged, and it has its own report.
It includes details such as:
- Tax Name
Name of the tax.
- Sales Tax
The total amount of money your business has paid as sales tax.
- Purchase Tax
The total amount of money your business has paid as purchase tax.
- Expense-Related Tax
The total amount of money your business has paid as expense-related tax.
- Net Tax Position
The net tax position of your business.
Where these figures come from
The tax reports read your ledger directly, the same entries your profit and loss and balance sheet read. They are not a separate calculation over your documents.
That has practical consequences:
- Foreign currency is handled correctly. Tax on a USD invoice is reported at its base currency value at the invoice's own rate, rather than currencies being added together as if they were the same.
- Cash basis is real. Switching basis reports tax when it was settled rather than when it was invoiced, which matters where you are taxed on receipts. It is not an approximation applied afterwards.
- Tax withheld on your behalf is its own line. It is not mixed into input tax on purchases, because it is claimed differently. See Withholding Tax.
- What the report shows and what a payment settles cannot disagree, since both are computed the same way. See Tax Payments and Filing.
After a return has been filed
Once you mark a period filed, its figures are stored as filed. A transaction backdated into that period afterwards does not change them. It is shown separately as activity since filing, so you can carry it into your next return rather than discovering your records no longer match what you submitted.
